Design thinking for design systems
Design systems help companies scale their design and development efforts, ensure consistent product experiences, and increase brand recognition.
Material Design is a design system developed and first launched by Google in 2014. Adopted by many Google teams, Material Design also has a strong external following.
Using Material Design as a case study, in this talk I will draw on the principles of Design Thinking and outline 4 P’s that are different aspects of creating, maintaining, scaling and innovating for Design Systems: Philosophy, Purpose, Practice, Participation. I will explain why all these need to be continually reconsidered, a form of continuous evaluation and iteration, and the implications for leaders, managers, users, and creative innovators of any Design System.
